Signing an agreement between Tanit Port and the International Investment Fund.

As part of the partnership between the International Investment Fund and the Mauritanian government, a major project is underway to redevelop and modernize the Tanit Port, one of Mauritania’s key maritime ports. The project is divided into several phases, focusing on upgrading existing facilities and establishing new infrastructure to meet growing economic demands.

Overview of the Current Tanit Port:

Tanit Port is a small port primarily used for fishing. Despite limited resources, the Mauritanian government has maximized its potential. The port receives over 200 fishing boats daily, producing between 600 and 1,000 tons of fish. Its strategic location, 60 kilometers from the capital Nouakchott and 30 kilometers from the international airport of Oumtounsy, allows it to connect with international markets.

Key Features of the New Project:

The goal of the project is to transform Tanit Port into a modern maritime economic hub capable of handling the import and export of oil, gas, and minerals. Through a partnership between the International Investment Fund and the Mauritanian government .

Project Components:

  1. Fish Processing Facilities: The project will establish a fish processing plant, including production lines for cleaning, sorting, and packaging fish. Additional plastic and cardboard factories will support product packaging.
  2. Logistics Facilities: The port will feature 30 docks, divided between mineral shipping and oil unloading. Additionally, oil tanks and a 300-kilometer railway will be constructed to transport oil and minerals.
  3. Tourism and Residential Facilities: The project includes the construction of 1,500 housing units and three hotels (five, four, and three stars). Social halls, a national theater, and a Mauritania museum will also be established, along with a water park.
  4. Maritime Support Facilities: The project will build ship maintenance workshops, spare parts warehouses, and fuel stations to support ships and fishing boats.

Mauritania’s Fisheries Potential:

Mauritania boasts a vast fishing industry, with an annual capacity of 1.87 million tons and over 600 species of fish. The project aims to enhance this potential by modernizing infrastructure and developing factories and logistics facilities to support fish exports.

Expected Impact of the Project:

The redevelopment of Tanit Port is expected to contribute significantly to Mauritania’s economic development by creating new job opportunities and improving fishing and maritime trade operations.
